July 18th * Lido Pimienta Artist Talk

Where: Whitehorse Public Library (Fireweed Room)

When: Thursday July 18th, from 7:30 - 8:30pm

Cost: Free *capacity is limited - first come/first served.

Lido Pimienta Artist Talk Navigate the Industry or Die Trying In this talk, Lido Pimienta will explore the many different ways to be a recording artist, to become an artist (who gets paid) and the hilarious, dramatic and painful ways to survive as one – in the context of Canada from an immigrant’s lense. Hear stories of migration, disenfranchisement, rejection, and the usual where, when, and how to fit family, friends, and dating into one’s music career. Lido's various identities as a racialized woman, parent and independent artist all serve as the backdrop to this familiar narrative of the: #emergingartist #findingmyartisticvoice #aesthetic and the ultimate classic #icantpayrentonmyown. Pimienta’s art talk is an honest conversation about access, democracy of space, apolitical art/music critique, and issues of forced-diversity in art institutions and more specifically, the music industry in the context of Canada. How can we create safer spaces for vulnerable audiences? What happens when the words diversity and feminist are used or applied only as pseudo-requirement to meet programming criteria? How can the Canadian indie music scene grow? Pimienta will use her own personal experience in the music industry to give answers/insights into many of these questions and will take attendees on a journey of self-care and resistance delivered in the most genuine and true DIY spirit.

About the event:

Play Your Gender is a documentary film featuring Juno Award-winning musician and artist Kinnie Starr and her conversations with music industry veterans and newcomers about the realities of being a woman in the music industry. Only 5% of music producers are women even though many of the most bankable stars in the industry are female. Under these conditions, what does it take to make it as a woman in music?

Yukon Girls Rock CampDawson City Music Festival & Something Shows are ecstatic to host a screening in Whitehorse. We will be on hand for a discussion and info session on Yukon Girls Rock Camp in Whitehorse, and how we are working to increase the number of women in music, starting right here at home.
