BENEATH THE BROADCAST
“Whether you're into old CBC gear from the 1950s or looking for bands to add to your playlist, Beneath the Broadcast is the Venn diagram for you.” - CBC MUSIC
“It serves as a window into Whitehorse's fascinating pan-genre DIY scene, which is unprecedently active for somewhere so far remote in northern Canada.” - GIGWISE
Beneath the Broadcast is a new film aimed at capturing the experience of living and creating art in the Yukon. Shot throughout the sprawling layout of the CBC North basement, Beneath the Broadcast features live performances from nine eclectic Whitehorse acts surrounded by relics and memories of the northern broadcaster’s past.
Capturing a variety of genres – folk, rock n’ roll, alternative, sacred harp/doom, soul, hip-hop, and grunge – the film creates a collaborative piece highlighting the music and the filmmakers of Whitehorse at a specific moment in time. A collaboration between Yukon-based organizations Something Shows, Big Boat Records, local filmmaker Brendan Preston, and musical acts Jona Barr, The Sputnik Experiment, Paris Pick, Cryptozoologists, Calla Kinglit, LOCAL BOY, The Sweeties, Groan Boy, and Soda Pony, Beneath the Broadcast represents a variety of experience, perspective, and reflections on life through art in the Yukon capital.
Following a screening in Whitehorse on April 29, the film exists in two separate formats: one as a complete full-length film, and the other as nine individual videos featuring each act.
